Last week was an interesting one for Axe Golf Club Ladies starting on Monday battling a strong North Westerly with all ex- captains playing for the Ex-Captains' Cup. Sandra Walker , in great form at present, took the honours with a creditable 33 points in difficult conditions. Then on Wednesday, in better weather, they competed in the Rabbit Cup suitably named for handicappers of 26.5 and above.
The Trophy was donated to the club by Di Rogers. Those not eligible for the cup, played a Stableford competition. Some very good scores ensued especially by the winner Karin Cox with an amazing 39 points to take both competitions.
The Seniors come up with some crazy ideas for fun games and the recent Vice-Captain Steve Thompson's choice was something known as a Multiplier. Now if I have got this right its a team of three playing normal stableford where each score is mutiplied. For example, if each member got a net birdie ( 3 points) then that would earn a massive 27 points on that hole (3 x 3 x3 ). However, the sting in the tail is if anyone did not score then the team gets nil on that hole, eg 3 x 3 x 0 = 0. It puts a lot of pressure on everyone.
The strong team of Terry Atkins, Tony Strong and John Purdy wonbwith an excellent score of 140 points but pushed all the way by equally strong team of Nigel Pritchard, Stuart Mackie and Terry Atkins with 136.
Terry Atkins was in both teams as Nigel and Stuart did not have a third member so the vice-captain drew a number out a hat from the 27 who competed and drew number 13 who just happened to be, of course, Terry Atkins -luckyfor them.
Last Friday a good number of members travelling to Wrangaton for Captain David Lacey's Away Day. On a lovely day it is fantastic but on a bad day you want to be somewhere else, it being half on Dartmoor and half parkland. It must have rained all day as half of us had to give up after nine holes but some brave souls did all 18. Winner of the Geoff Hubbard Trophy was Treasurer Bill Polley with an unbelievable 38 points.
Despite the rain it was a very enjoyable day with wonderful prizes given out by the Captain Many thanks to Malcolm Glass for organising the event.
The Men's section enjoyed much better weather last Sunday in their October Medal as evidenced by some very good scores. Brad Burraston won Division One with a net 65 from young Nathan Maddocks coming second with 72 and, keeping it in the family, Ian Burraston took thirdplace with 77.
Robert Ballard won Division Two also with a net 65, well ahead of Paul Hankin and Chris Glover who took second and third spots with 81 and 84 respectively. Our B team retained the Basil Dean Shieldbeating a strong Honiton side 8-4 over two legs home and away. Well done Andy Jeffery and the lads."
