Axe Cliff Golf Club was delighted to appoint its youngest ever Men's Captain this year - Harvey Gibbons whose father Richard has been a member since 1982.

Richard first introduced Harvey to Axe Cliff when he was only 12 when he joined the club's then thriving Juniors and trained by present Senior Geoff Hughes (now 87) and John Gooding on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

He is now the club's youngest captain at 29. Harvey is a local boy who has grown up in Seaton and lives in the two with his fiancee Beth Richards and their dog Pickles.

In his own words: "It has truly been a privilege to take on the captaincy to get involved with my home club and give something back to my local community.

"I still never tire of the stunning views and the sense of camaraderie between the members which brings me back each week. Its always lovely to see new faces joining the club and they are always welcomed with open arms."

When Harvey is not playing or organising golf events he is found running his own business, R & H Signs, which he took over from his Uncle Rob last year.

The Ladies have been having fun lately. Firstly they held their Invitation Day recently with ten members inviting two other guests each from far and wide.

They picked a very windy day but at least it stayed dry and everyone appeared to enjoy themselves particularly the tasty sandwiches and chips and lovely pudding in the clubhouse afterwards. There were a number of prizes but the main winners were Paula Heasman and her two guests scoring 75 points.

Karin Cox's team pushed them all the way to take second spot with 74 points. Karin also played well with Jo Hopgood in the county Express & Echo event held at Exeter representing Axe Cliff with all other Devon teams taking part. They finished with a creditable middle of the table position.

Last week they played the fun Pink Ball competition which I am told is the same as the Yellow Ball event but, of course, played with a pink ball. The aim is to keep the Pink ball in play as it counts double until it is lost. Playing in pairs the only team not to lose it was Stella Thompson and Pauline Willis, who stomped in to win with an amazing 101 points. The next nearest pair only had 71.

The Seniors have been busy just lately and managed to finish their September Medal with a fine win by Chris Walker in Division One with a net 68.

Peter Petherbridge and Nigel Pritchard were close on his heels with 69 and 70 respectively to take second and third places.

Division Two was hard fought and only separated on countback with Leighton Morgan taking the honours from the in-form Richard Bush, both on 73. Chris Read was third with 82.

The annual Ron Miller Claret Jug was also well attended as always in memory of the club's popular late treasurer Ron Miller. Octogenarian from the Valleys Alan Morgan, playing with Stuart Mackie, were worthy winners with 70 points . Vice-captain Steve Thompson, playing with another golfer from Wales , Dave Morgan, were second with 66.

Mind you, if Mark Wisby hadn't missed a six-inch putt on the 18th, playing with Bob Cook, it may have been a different story as they took third place, on countback only. Dave Morgan's two on the 18th was the difference.
