My mother and father met when they were both serving in Gibraltar during the Second World War. Tim was a flight-sergeant in the RAF and Beryl was a petty officer in the Wrens.

Tim was an aircraft fitter, repairing damaged aircraft, which had returned from action. However, he had learned to play the piano and piano-accordion as a boy and played with the air-force band.

The owners of the Ridgeway County Hotel at Smallridge, one of the Axminster area's most popular eating out venues, say that are "super excited" about reopening on Saturday, July 4th.

The former public house is run by Carole and Kevin Baulch who have put a lot of new measures in place to ensure social distancing and government instruction are strictly adhered to ensure customers and staff are kept safe.

The George Hotel, Axminster, with an outside area which will help them adhere to regulations about the serving of alcohol

Axminster's most extensive hospitality outlet – the historic George Hotel, England's first coaching posthouse – will be opening again on July 4th following Boris Johnson's announcement that social distancing will be reduced from two metres to one-plus.

A spokesperson for the owners, South Coast Inns, has confirmed that The George will be back in business on Saturday week and they were awaiting further advice from the government. The emphasis, however, will be ensuring all customers and staff will be safe with social distancing strictly observed.

Devon is said to be in a good position to welcome back visitors from July 4th following lockdown

Devon is in a good position to start welcoming back visitors following the government's announcement yesterday (Tuesday) that overnight stays would be permitted from July 4th.

Councillor John Hart, leader of Devon County Council, one of England's 11 Beacon Councils who will be leading the future local management of COVID-19 in partnership with the government, said: "All the evidence from our Public Health experts shows that because we were able to get an early grip on the virus Devon continues to have one of the lowest rates of COVID-19 cases in the country.
