Over the next few months the former skatepark at Cloakham Lawns will see a much-needed facelift, as Axminster business The Cornerhouse Bakery opens 'The Scone Shack' on the site.

Led by Lee Taylor and Cindy Furse, the bakery has exciting plans to encourage walkers and cyclists, providing them with a tasty treat along the way.

The pair are well-known for their home made freshly-baked goods and will be serving their cream and savoury tea menus, taking the traditional Devon cream tea and giving it a twist with flavoured scones and fresh toppings.

As well as providing food and hot and cold drinks, Lee and Cindy will focus on making the area a "safe haven" along the cycle path for all to enjoy.

They will provide picnic seating for the general public, without having to purchase from The Shack, and as an information point for walkers and cyclists looking for new routes to explore.

They also plan to form a volunteer cycle-path maintenance group, giving the whole area "a bit of TLC throughout the year".

Over the next few months they will focus on clearing the site and making it safe and attractive before opening in mid-late spring.

Chairman of Axminster Skatepark Ian Hall said: "This is an idea that the whole committee endorsed right from the start and is literally a win, win, win for the community just as we are coming out of the most collectively difficult period since the First and Second World Wars.

"Getting people out and about walking and socialising again is key to getting much needed fun back on the menu and as this fantastic venture organically grows, it will make donations to the new skatepark that our town so richly deserves."

There are currently plans for a new skatepark to be built on the former football pitch at Millwey Rise, and campaigners hope they will not have much longer to wait until it is up and running.
