Campaigners for a long-awaited new skatepark in Axminster hope the project will come to fruition in the not too distant future.

The old skatepark on the Cloakham Lawns site was closed down in September 2019. Having been an independent skatepark - not owned by the local council like in many other towns - it was liable for all its own costs and maintenance, including insurance of £750 a year.

With the old metal ramps needing repair but no funds to complete the work, the decision was taken to close the park down.

With skateboarding's popularity on the rise and the sport set to make its Olympic debut in Tokyo this year, enthusiasts are hoping they won't have to wait much longer for a new park in the Millwey Rise area.

Offering an update on the project, Eve Chubb said: "The recent proposal is for the old football ground site which is council owed. This is all round much better in size, position, central but not too close to residential areas, also easier access for maintenance, lighting and services.

"Cllr Andrew Moulding has met with Russ Holbrook from Maverick Skateparks to look at the area for a new design.

"Axminster Skatepark has become an official charity thanks to the relentless support of the town and local councillors. Our original fans have got their own children and still waiting for a park.

"The schools have said they would use this facility in their PE curriculum and skateboarding is a recognised Olympic sport and should be considered as important as swimming, football, etc. Such a facility will accommodate all ages and abilities, with boards, scooters, BMX bikes including disabled wheelchairs etc.

"We are noticing other smaller towns being blessed with their own skateparks and, as Axminster grows, there is no excuse not to offer the same."

The new skatepark project has been awarded £150,000 from Section 106 money from local developers. Eve said the next step will be to apply for match-funding from the Lottery and other grant pots.

"With this great news I hope to keep the enthusiasm and massive support that we have seen so far," she said.

Residents can also support the campaign by shopping via smile.amazon.co.uk and choosing Axminster Skatepark as their chosen charity, with Amazon 0.5% of all sales made through this platform to the cause.
