AXMINSTER: Community picnic benches return to the Minster Green

By Francesca Evans 12th Aug 2021

Community picnic benches have returned to the Minster Green in Axminster.

Benches were first placed on the Minster Green last summer for takeaway customers of the Community Waffle House during lockdown.

They were a popular feature and now the Parochial Church Council has allowed benches to be reinstalled for the use of the entire community.

The project has been led by Totally Locally Axminster with the support of many local organisations and businesses.

Grant support was received by East Devin District Council and Axminster Town Council gave its backing to the project.

Axminster Property stored and delivered the benches and the Community Waffle House, based across the road in Trinity House, will manage them on a daily basis but they will be for use by the entire community and not just Waffle House customers.

A spokesperson for Axminster Property said: "The benches look great and allow the people of the town and visitors to enjoy this central community space.

"There is so much more that could be done to make Axminster even more special, let's hope that the benches are just the start and the town is able to experiment with ways to improve it and use it always with respect."
