Axminster Carnival organisers have announced a scaled-back programme of events after it was announced that the East Devon Circuit processions would not take place this year.

The traditional carnival processions will not take place in East Devon towns this year, as carnival clubs have not been able to build their illuminated floats throughout the year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A spokesperson for Axminster Carnival said: "It has been drawn to our attention that there have been questions asked as to why there will be no Axminster Carnival procession during 2021.

"Axminster forms part of East Devon Carnival circuit, who collectively decided not to hold carnivals in 2021 due to COVID restrictions; this decision was made in November 2020 taking into consideration that the planning of many carnival clubs start soon after previous carnival seasons conclude.

"As a carnival committee, we have to commit ourselves to considerable financial expenditure way in advance and, with the ever present risk presented by COVID, sadly it was not viable or affordable to do this during 2021.

"Sadly, and in addition, we have been unable to carry out any fundraising activities or events since March 2020 with various restrictions and/or lockdowns and a lack of suitable venues meaning we have been unable to hold our popular bingo on a weekly basis nor, any other fund raising initiatives.

"Despite this, the good news is we are hoping to celebrate carnival in some form. Our small committee of dedicated volunteers are working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the tradition of carnival is upheld in the town.

"At a recent committee meeting it was unanimously agreed that we can not let carnival week pass without some element of celebration."

The following events will now be held during Axminster Carnival Week:

Fundraising coffee morning – Thursday, September 16, The Church Room

Misplaced Article Window Competition, kindly organised by Karen Hussey throughout the week

Cash Prize Bingo – Saturday, September 18, which would have been procession day, Guildhall, 7pm for 8pm eyes down

The spokesperson added: "We are also hopeful that we may soon be able to announce other planned events for a little later in the year, so please follow our Facebook page and keep an eye out for any future updates!"
