The Royal British Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary to be celebrated in Axminster with the laying of a wreath on Saturday.

The ceremony will take place at the town's War Memorial on the Minster Green and the wreath will be laid by the chairman of the Axminster branch, former mayor Mervyn Symes.

A spokesperson for the Legion said: "The RBL's 100th birthday falls on May 15. On this day in 1921, representatives of the four national organisations of ex-serviceman came together at The Cenotaph in London to create the British Legion.

"Born in the aftermath of the First World War, the charity's founding mission was to fight for the rights of those who had given so much and come back to so little.

"Today, the RBL continues to stand with the Armed Forces community and challenge injustices to ensure all those who have served and sacrificed on our behalf get the fair treatment and recognition they deserve."

The Axminster branch will be celebrating their own 100th anniversary with a special parade through the town on July 17 followed by a community party on the Minster Green.
