The High Sheriff of Devon, Lady Lucy Studholme, was welcomed to Axminster by local firefighters on Tuesday night.

The High Sheriff, who was appointed in May, visited the fire station for a training exercise, during which the crew demonstrated their skills and understanding in a road traffic collision scenario.

The crew were faced with two persons trapped in a vehicle; the driver trapped by their legs and the passenger suffering spinal injuries.

They got to work releasing the driver using a technique called a dashboard lift to free the casualty. They then removed the roof to allow a safe extrication of the passenger using a spinal board.

The crew commented: "It was a pleasure to have Lady Studholme at Axminster Fire Station."
