Axminster Town Council reports on 'challenging' year in first newsletter

By Francesca Evans 20th May 2021

Axminster Town Council has reported on a "difficult and challenging year for all" as it sent out its first newsletter to residents.

The council has launched a new annual newsletter for residents, with the first reporting on how the council has coped during the coronavirus pandemic.

The newsletter reads: "Our plans and everyday activities have been put on hold or done in different ways. The work of the town council has been affected too – many of the projects we had hoped to undertake have had to be postponed and our meetings have been held remotely.

The newsletter offers details on some of the projects that have been carried out by the council over the past year, as well as its curreent objectives which include:

- Restore the Jubilee Fountain in Trinity Square

- Create a climbing wall and play facilities at Raymonds Hill

- Install 'vehicle-activated' speed control signs on the entry roads into the town

- Create new maps and finger post signs around town for visitors

- Install CCTV cameras - a Safer Towns Project in partnership with the Police

- Support the 'Action in Axminster' regeneration project

- Improve facilities at the Guildhall

- Complete a Neighbourhood Plan of policies to inform land use from 2023 – 2030

The newsletter also pays tribute to two of the town's "most devoted public servants" who died during the last 12 months - three-times Mayor of Axminster Douglas Hull, and Cllr Anni Young, who was serving as mayor at the time of her death in December.

As Axminster Town Council returns to face-to-face meetings, residents are being encouraged to attend the annual parish meeting to be held in the Guildhall on Monday, May 24 at 7pm, where they will be able to raise any local issues.

There will also be reports given by the mayor, county councillor and various council committees.
