Axminster Drama Club to stage first post-lockdown production in December

Axminster Drama Club (ADC) has announced its return to the stage with a production of 'Nativity! The Musical'.

As with all other theatre groups, ADC has been away from the stage since February 2020, when it staged 'Blackadder Returns', just a few weeks before the coronavirus pandemic lockdown measures were imposed.

Although members have been staying in touch, the club has been unable to hold any events since the first lockdown in March 2020.

So, it was with some excitement that, following the government announcement that restrictions will be easing over the coming months, ADC announces it has secured permission to perform 'Nativity! The Musical' on December 17 and 18, this year.

The production is based on the same story as the much-loved films and has been adapted for the stage by the film's creator, Debbie Isitt.

Set in Coventry, the story revolves around a production of the annual nativity production at St Bernadette's School, where Mr Maddens has been asked to direct the show. But in an effort to get one over on a teacher at a rival school, he says Hollywood is coming to film it.

His teaching assistant, Mr Poppy, overhears the conversation and believes it to be the truth and before Mr Maddens can correct the situation, events start to run out of control.

The stage production features many of the songs that featured in the film as well as a host of new ones.

Sara Leat, who will be the director, said: "This is a show we have looked at before but have been unable to secure the licence to perform it, so we were delighted when it was agreed that we could stage it.

"It will be great to get a production on the Guildhall stage again."

"There is a lot of work to do before we get to December, but we are looking forward to holding auditions, once the situation allows and then we can aim to make a start on rehearsals."
