Axminster commemorates 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion

By Philip Evans 20th May 2021

A few brave souls turned out in Axminster in atrocious weather on Saturday to acknowledge 100 years since the first wreath was laid at The Cenotaph by Earl Haig marking the formation of the Royal British Legion.

Interestingly, Earl Haig's granddaughter, Sarah Lopes, is intending to be present at the Axminster branch centenary in July. She is currently RBL Devon County President.

Present at the war memorial on The Minster Green on Saturday were Cllr Jill Farrow (Mayor of Axminster), Cllr Paul Hayward (East Devon District Council), Cllr Sarah Jackson (East Devon District Council), Val Warner (Ladies' Section standard bearer), Lesley Frankau (Ladies' Section chairperson), the Reverend Geoffrey Walsh (branch chaplain), Peter Simon (Men's Section standard bearer) Mervyn Symes (Men's Section chairman), John Yorke (vice-chairman) and president Ken Brake.
