Axminster residents are being urged to make this Christmas "extra special" with an appeal for a mass ringing of bells on Christmas Eve to end this difficult year "with a bit of magic".

Posting a message on the Axminster Nub News website, Laura Newman urged the town to "come together" over the Christmas period and make a special effort to make the town "as festive as possible".

Laura said: "Let's come together to light up and decorate as much of the local residential, businesses and community areas as possible this year. This can be a small decoration, homemade or bought, with lights, etc."

She also urged residents to support their neighbours if they had extra lights to spread the decorations over neighbouring properties.

"Think of the elderly who may not be able to decorate anymore but wish they could still enjoy their decorations and a Christmas tree.

"We all need the joy and kindness this Christmas, not just the children.

"Also if you would like to donate any decorations or lights you can deliver to me and if you are in need you can private message me on Facebook and arrange for a delivery or collection."

Laura is also asking residents to step outside their homes at 6pm on Christmas Eve to ring a bell and sing 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' to "spread Christmas spirit and to help Santa fly that sleigh".

Laura added: "After a tough year it would be an amazing memory for the kids and communities. Let's end 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness".

Light Up Axminster last week announced their plans for the town's annual Christmas celebrations.

While they had hoped to continue with the festive market, lantern parade and celebratory event that has taken place in previous years, they are unable to do so with the current COVID-19 regulations in place, but every effort will be made to make the town as festive as possible.
