Axe Cliff Golf Club Ladies enjoyed a blustery first round for their Winter League competition, played over 15 holes, and it showed in the results .
The joint winners were Jill Wellington and Pauline Willis with a modest 24 points but at least they can improve on that in future rounds, hopefully, with calmer weather.
Finally we have a result after Rob Grove and Chris Read were able to check the Magic Multiplier, held the week before last. With teams of three and each score being multiplied in the order scored, if a team on hole 1 scored 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 points but if then on hole 2 scored 3 x 3 x 0 = 0, so it was important for no team member to get a blob (0 points). Having said that, the winners Leighton Morgan, Rob Heard and Chris Alexander, as I understand it, did have a number of blobs but also had a goodly number of 27 pointers ((three net birdies) to amassed an amazing 107 points.
Way behind in second place came Terry Atkins, Bunny Hanson Bill Dearling with 92 points. I would have put five bob on the strong team of Brian Thompson, John Purdy and Tony Strong but at least they came third with a respectable 81 points so were a good each-way bet.
On Friday we were back to an individual Monthly Medal in quite reasonable weather for a change. Some good scores backed this up with Brian Thompson being the leader in the clubhouse with a net 70 before John Purdy came in with a net 68 then quickly followed by Bunny Hanson breezing in with an unbelievable net 62 .
The Division results are as follows: Division One -1, John Purdy 68 ; 2, Terry Atkins 69; 3. Nigel Tarr 69. Nigel put his good score down to not having to cook any breakfasts for his clients that day.
Division 2 - 1, Bunny Hanson 62 (his handicap of 29 surely must come down?); 2, Bill Dearling 67; 3, Mark Wisby 69. The two weeks in Antigua swimming in 30 degrees of heat partner Shirley obviously did wonders for him- I've never seen him smile so much!
Mark and Shirley with friends Andrew & Emma also had the energy and brains to win our excellent Christmas quiz held in the clubhouse on Saturday night. successfully organised by Rob Grove and Barbara Cummings.
Everyone also enjoyed a delicious meal cooked by Clare. Rob even got some great singing by the quiz players in answering some of the Carol questions - a lovely evening. My team of self, daughter Sophie and son James and farmer Geoff Hughes were pipped for bottom prizes by Gilbert Cox and his team.
