Axminster kicked off its Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Thursday, with the official opening of Jubilee Field.
Ownership of the field, between Dukes Way and the Foxhill area, was recently handed over to Axminster Town Council from East Devon District Council.
The town council has already carried out some planting and created a fenced dog-free picnic area in the field, although dogs are welcome in the field outside this area.
There are also plans to expand a footpath around the entire circumference of the field and for more recreation equipment to be installed, including a climbing wall.
The official opening of the public space was held as the first event in Axminster in a four-fay programme of celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
The Mayor of Axminster, Cllr Jill Farrow, welcomed residents along with Cllr Steve Holt, who has led the Jubilee Field project, and town crier Nick Goodwin.
Cllr Farrow unveiled a plaque that was engraved by town councillor Alfie Brooker and donated by his family.
Axminster Town Council also provided free ice creams for all those attending.
Among those attending was Sylvia Clark (nee Cleal), born in Stockland just two days after the Queen's Coronation in June 1953. She brought along with her a silver coronation spoon which was gifted to her as the baby born in Stockland closest to the Coronation day.
Axminster is now looking forward to the lighting of a brazier on the Minster Green tonight followed by a toast to Her Majesty. Find full details of today's events here and look out for our daily roundup of events over the weekend.
