The Axe Cliff Golf Club Ladies swung into action last Wednesday to play their first county prize round and achieved some good scores in reasonable weather.

Captain Paula Heasman won the day with a solid 35 points over the 18 hole stableford with the present Venerable Devon County Champion Stella Thompson taking second spot with a good 30 points.

The Men's Section played their seventh round of their winter league competition last Sunday, again in good conditions as witnessed with their podium winners. First was Alex Taylor/L. Snell with 43 only one in front of A. Anning/J Gait on 42 who were also just one in front of Steve Baker and Mike Cottam on 41.

The Seniors, on Friday, were playing their fifth round of the winter league over 15 holes, but I have to ask Nigel Garwood if he played 18 holes as with a score of 38 points he was eight below par! Now Nigel, as a retired Lt Commander, is a very honest guy but he could have had a senior moment as we have agreed to make it an 18- hole competition next winter.

Nigel won Division Two with David Evans taking second place with a respectable 27 points on count-back from Chris Alexander who was third.

In Division One it was good to see Chris Walker back in form, after his health challenges, with a solid 30 points also on count-back from treasurer Bill Polley leaving third spot to Simon Wellington in demob mode with 29 points.

The Veterans' Knock-Out Cup is reaching its final round with the semi-finals to be played by end of February. It's going to be high handicappers against low ones making it an interesting finish and difficult to call.

John Purdy (22) will take on Stuart Mackie (10) in one with last year's captain John Hanna (23) and Paul Curtin (14) in the other.

Good luck boys and well done getting this far. I am sure that the final will be an all ticket affair now that Covid relaxations will allow and you can buy them from me now at a modest price.
