Another good week for Axe Cliff Golf Club ladies in a Devon Vets competition. On Monday it was the Captain's Meeting held at Stover and it was won overall by Axe Cliff captain Anne Jarvis who with 37 points was the outright winner of the prestigious Ord Cup and Caroline Bond came first in the Bronze Division with 36 points and only missed out on being runner-up to Anne on countback.

On Wednesday captain Anne organised an individual Stableford, but once they were in they were paired with another person, from a secret draw, to decide the winning duo. It was a very close competition as two pairs got the same score of 76 points on the back nine the winning duo scored 35 and the 2nd duo 32: 1st - Margaret Kenchington and Paula Heasman; 2nd - Stella Thompson and Jo Hopgood.

The Seniors were also busy last week with a return match against Wheathill in Somerset on the Monday captained by yours truly. Whilst we had beaten them recently at home, they got their revenge and won convincingly by 5.5 to 0.5. A lot of the games went down to the wire, as did mine, with Steve Thompson, my partner only dropping six shots. I was not in form to support him but did win our nearest the pin with a solid driver to a 160 yard par 3. It only bounced three times before going onto the green.

I did feel sorry for Steve as we took our shots from him and one of our opponents was given two shots on three holes and one on the other 15. This was Steve's his first game at Wheathill so he didn't know the course. As we won the home match, I call that an honourable draw.

On Tuesday six of us played at Teignmouth in the Devon Captains & Past Captains annual Match in a very strong wind which made the course very tough indeed and I wont mention the scores but it was won with only 33 points but not by any of us. Gilbert Cox and I did score 33 if you added both our scores together!

Friday was the start of our Winter League at home and I await the scores for round one

.

You have to be a good drinker to win the Hangover Cup in the Men's Section and certainly the podium proved that with Paul Clode winning with +1 , on countback,

from retired popular Axminster bus driver Stuart Mackie, who also now plays with the Seniors, leaving Oman's favourite golfer, Paul Hilder, taking third spot with a level score.

Paul used to play with the Seniors but has gone back to work at Woodroffe School as a teacher. I hope they were all given a lift home safely.
