Sadly last week the members of Axe Cliff Golf Club had to say goodbye to another of their much loved Seniors Roger Wright who died on the January 7. aged 82, peacefully at home with his close family.

I can recall him being the Seniors' Captain way back in 2002 after joining the club in 1997, a year before I came to live in Seaton, and he carried on playing until 2019.

He also designed the club Logo but not a lot of people know that. He often played with two other stalwarts, namely Terry Jessop and Peter Jakes, but they used to go out early even before I got out of bed.

We kne that Roger had a long career with the Ministry of Defence but he was very secretive on what he did. However, he was very good at electronics, so I am told, and kept many a TV alive. Mel, his lovely daughter, gave a wonderful eulogy at his funeral in East Devon Crematorium and told me that he played left-handed mostly in his adult life from Bahrain to Malta and Morocco, then at St Mellion and Bath. I agree with Mel that he always had a smile even when Terry beat him with a huge sense of fun for everyone and his many friends at the club. Apparently in his varied visits abroad he met and shook hands with the great Jack Nicklaus . I bet Jack smiled back at him.

It was fitting that Di his loving widow held a gathering after the funeral in our clubhouse with excellent catering from Alex and his team. He is sorely missed by all his family and many friends at Axe Cliff Golf Club. We do have a number of events to talk about but this week is all about Roger.
