It was a busy week for Axe Cliff Ladies with a few competing in the Devon County Seniors Championship at Okehampton .

Putting her professional training to good use was Stella Thompson, who came an excellent second, with most of the top ten coming from the home club - well done Stella.

Sandra Walker also did well but just missed out of the prizes.

Last Wednesday tt;here was a good turn out for the Medal and second round of the Axe Cliff Cup in near perfectconditions. Paula Heasman certainly enjoyed herself with a magnificent net 73, but was let off by Jill Wellington who somehow managed a nine on the 18th.

Mind you, she still got a credible net 78.

The Seniors have been competing hard in the difficult Masters competition which requires a lot of patience and skill over four rounds, especially when you couple

the rounds with other events.

Round Three had an amazing result with Nigel Garwood not losing a ball and scoring a fantastic below par net 68 which included an eighth and a two. Pete Casey also played well with 71 to take second position and Nigel Pritchard kept his hopes alive with 73 in third place.

It was coupled with The Least Putts Cup kindly donated by John Pugh. David Evans is the new holder with 25 putts or only 1.31 recurring per hole which takes some doing.

Gilbert Cox also showed off his skills with only 26 putts and must have missed a short one somewhere probably on the seventh downhill.

Last Friday was quite a test for the final round with a cold Northerly swirling strong wind making me hang onto the buggy more whilst I was pouring Geoff Hughes coffee from my flask without spilling over him.

It is often said that the weather does not affect a good player and so it proved with Paul Curtin winning with a net 75. pushed all the way by Peter Petherbridge

and Nigel Pritchard, both on 76.

The exciting finish left Nigel Pritchard the undisputed new Masters Champion on a gross result of 291 or 72.75 average per round, just pushing Paul Curtin into second place on 293 and leaving Roger Hill third with 299 or 74.75 average.

The Warren Cup was also played along with the final round and was proudly won by Richard Bush with a net 80.

This week Axe Cliff are playing for the prestigious Charity Bowl (for 65 +) and captain, John Hanna, is marking the occasion by organising a raffle in the clubhouse,

being his first opportunity to raise money for his charity FORCE.
