The number of coronavirus cases confirmed in the last seven days has risen by 150% across Devon and Cornwall, with 18 new cases reported in East Devon this week.

Government statistics show that 154 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 96 new cases confirmed last week.

The newspapers in East Devon published by Archant are being converted to 'good news' only with journalists being made redundant

The parlous state of the regional press in the UK, which has led to hundreds of local newspapers closing down in recent years, has been underlined by major changes about to be introduced by publisher Archant's East Devon titles – the Exmouth Herald, the Sidmouth Herald and the Midweek Herald.

Hold The Front Page (HTFP), the newspaper industry's dedicated website, is reporting today that Archant is planning a "radical" restructure involving their East Devon publishing operation based at Exeter Airport.

Axminster firefighters had a busy day yesterday (Saturday) assisting Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service with an agricultural fire at Fishpond Bottom, near Lyme Regis.

Five pump crews and two water carrier crews were called to the fire involving straw inside a single storey barn in Combe Drain, Fishpond Bottom.

A flypast of RAF Chipmunks at the memorial lunch at Diamond's Tearoom in Cooks Lane, with the late Rupert Butler pictured inset

A church service and lunch was held last weekend in memory of former RAF Flight Lieutenant and Axminster resident Rupert Butler, who sadly died following cardiac arrest on his 80th birthday in May.

Following the easing of some coronavirus restrictions, the memorial requiem service was held at St Mary's Catholic Church in Axminster followed by a lunch hosted by Diamond's Tearoom in Cooks Lane, where guests enjoyed a flypast by two Chipmunks, one of Rupert's favourite aircraft which he trained others in during his RAF career.
