The Liberal Democrats have gained a seat on East Devon District Council in the Trinity ward, which includes Uplyme, Rousdon and Combpyne, and Axmouth.

Liberal Democrat candidate Susan Westerman won the seat in yesterday's election with 512 votes, with Conservative Andrew Turner – well known in Uplyme as a parish councillor – polling 441.

Previous Trinity ward councillor and chair of East Devon District Council, independent Ian Thomas, did not seek re-election.

A total of 959 ballot papers across the ward out of an electorate of 2,187, with three ballot papers rejected, equating to a turnout of 43.8 per cent.
