Kilmington ladies raise £2,360 for Cancer Research
Kilmington, like so many other small communities in East Devon, is the type of village where it seems the whole population will turn out in support of a good cause.
That was certainly the case recently when the ladies of the village organised the annual Big Breakfast at the village hall, raising the fantastic profit of £2,360 for Cancer Research UK.
When the doors of the village hall were opened at 9am, the villagers of Kilmington streamed in to taste the delights of a full English consisting of orange juice, cereal, fruit salad and a full fry-up superbly cooked ad served by the 19 lady volunteers who over the years have raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research. The cost of the ingredients were mainly donated, including the tomatoes and mushrooms by Millers' Farm Store in the village.
As well as a breakfast, the event was boosted by the takings from a tombola and cake stall.
The money raised was always passed onto the Axminster branch which has now folded after many years of stalwart fundraising.
For the first this year they were collected by the Lyme Regis branch which has recently passed the milestone of raising £200,000 since formation in 2008.
A party from the Lyme committee attended the event, including chairman Philip Evans MBE who commented: "We are so grateful to Kilmington for giving such wonderful support. The Big Breakfast was delicious and brilliantly organised and the money raised has already been sent to Cancer Research UK headquarters.
"One in every two people suffer from cancer now in one form or other during their life so very few families escape this terrible disease. It's events like the Kilmington Big Breakfast that ensure that crucial research continues and that one day a cure for cancer will become a reality."
