Axminster Town Council said it was "dismayed" to find vandals had targeted the Jubilee Field this week.

The flagpole in the field had been snapped in half and there was a large amount of offensive graffiti inside the infant play hut.

Ownership of the field was recently transferred from east Devon District Council to the town council. which has been investing in more recreational equipment and improving the space for the public.

A statement from the council read: "We will deal with events such as this as we always do as we won't let a few bad apples spoil the enjoyment of the amenity for the majority, but it does need to be pointed out that repairs such as this are paid for from your taxes and every pound spent on repairs takes a pound away from new amenity provision and delivery."

The council has asked parents and guardians to speak to their children if they recognise any of the graffiti 'tags', with with the local community beat officers or school teachers.

The statement added: "We are trying as hard as we can to make Axminster a beautiful place to live and it is disheartening to have to deal with things like this on an almost daily basis."
