The Flamingo Pool in Axminster will not reopen following the Christmas break on December 29 as planned, due to a major fault.

A statement on the pool's Facebook page stated: "We have unfortunately discovered a major fault with the structure of the Main Pool meaning we have had to empty the main pool and seek further professional guidance.

"Therefore at this current time the main pool is closed. We hope this can be fixed quickly and we will update via Facebook as and when we can.

"We will be contact with all group main pool swimming lessons to advise on start dates.

"The hydrotherapy pool will remain open, however, booking is essential.

"We thank you for your support this year and your understanding going forward."

The Flamingo Pool is run as a charity and does not receive funding from the local authority, like most other public swimming pools.

It is currently campaigning to raise £250,000 to make its facilities more sustainable and cut down on running costs.
