Fire crews were called to a retirement apartment in Axminster yesterday evening where items were burning on a cooker.

Charmouth and Colyton crews attended the incident in Wes Street at about 6.30pm last night.

The crews found the apartment was smoke-logged with items burning on the cooker.

They used two breathing apparatus, thermal imaging camera, fire extinguishers and a positive pressure fan to extinguish smouldering objects and ventilate the property.

Firefighters then performed a 'hot strike' for the other residents in the building. This involves talking, reassuring and giving all of the residents information on why we were there and what they can do to prevent reoccurrence.

The resident was left in the hands of the ambulance service and the building management.
