Emma Hilton, daughter of prominent Axminster couple Keith and Jane Broom , took part in Sunday's London Marathon and raised £2,500 for the charity, Myeloma UK.
In appealing for donations before the event,, Emma, who was born and educated in Axminster, said Myeloma UK was "very close to out hearts".
She explained: "Several years ago my Dad was carrying his grandson Jack as a baby, excited to get him to the beach in Lyme Regis. Unbeknown to Dad, the council had installed a ramp to the beach, changing the levels of the pavement.
"He took a tumble, totally encasing Jack in a cocoon as he fell, Jack was shocked but unhurt and Dad soldiered on and enjoyed playing on the beach in silent pain.
"It transpires he had broken two ribs which he was told would heal - they didn't, and after a few months of pain, further investigations were undertaken.
"He was diagnosed with Myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer. He has been very poorly at times over the years and has had many treatments. He'll never not have Myeloma, but has learnt to live with it.
"When Jack was old enough to understand Dad's illness he thought that it was his fault that grandad was poorly, but we've explained that grandad wouldn't have been diagnosed without him.
" I hope I do Myeloma UK and Dad proud." She certainly did that, rising £2,500 and winning the pride of her parents and all who know her in her home town of Axminster."
The charity offers support to patients, researching treatments and ways of diagnosing Myeloma earlier. It is the only UK charity focused on the discovery, development and access to new effective treatments.
