Axminster paid their respects in a scaled-back Armistice Day service this morning (Wednesday).

Remaining socially-distanced due to COVID-19 regulations, residents gathered around the war memorial at the Minster Green for a short service led by the Reverend Geoffrey Walsh.

Among those attending was the Mayor of Axminster, Cllr Anni Young, and deputy mayor, Cllr Jill Farrow.

As today marks the centenary of the interment of the Unnamed Warrior at Westminster Abbey, the Reverend Walsh opened by reading the poem 'The Soldier', by Rupert Brooke.

The chairman of the Axminster branch of the Royal British Legion, Mervyn Symes, then read the Roll of Honour - the names of all men from Axminster who died during the two World Wars - as crosses were placed in the memorial flower bed on the Minister Green.

The Reverend Walsh then delivered the Exhortation, followed by the Last Post and a two-minute silence at 11am.

The Reveille was then played and the Reverend Walsh delivered the Kohima Epitaph before leading prayers.

The service finished with the National Anthem.

Mr Symes then thanked all those attending for their support during the pandemic, which has seen Remembrance services across the country scaled back or held in private.

The Reverend Walsh also thanked Mr Symes for organising the event, and said they were now looking ahead to the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the town's war memorial in 2021.

A video of the service was broadcast live on the Axminster Nub News Facebook page for those who were unable to attend, and can still be viewed by clicking here.
