Axminster Leisure Centre will be launching Mini Rackets sessions this month for children to play badminton.

The Mini Rackets sessions will be the first in the centre's new junior programme, providing a variety of sporting opportunities for young people.

Mini Rackets will be held every Saturday morning from January 22, with a session for seven to 10 year olds from 9.15am to 10am and one for 11 to 15 year olds between 10.15am and 11am.

Both sessions are supervised and all equipment is provided. They cost £5 per child but are free to anyone with LED membership.

Axminster Leisure Centre manager Simon Price said: "These sessions have been started as I've noticed a gap in the community for sport-based junior activities in the local area.

"It's my hope that over the coming year I can introduce more activities for young people including trampolining and archery. We're actively seeking coaches to fill these roles.

"The great thing about these sessions is that they will allow children to engage with a sport that keeps them fit and healthy, it develops fine motor skills and works on building strong and healthy, bones muscles and respiratory health. It will also allow children to socialise in a safe and welcoming group.

"The sessions are being delivered by Steve Cloud – a teaching assistant from Axminster Primary Academy who has a wealth of experience working with young children."
