The new Axminster Community Shed has been recognised for its work in the local community with an award.

The project, which only got up and running this year, has been named winner of East Devon Area of Natural Beauty's (AONB) Acland Award.

Since 2013, the Acland Award has been presented annually by the East Devon AONB Partnership as a mark of excellence, recognising the best of environmental, economic and community-focused activity taking place within the AONB.

Commenting on the award, a spokesperson for Axminster Community Shed said: "A year ago our shed was just a dream shared by three guys over coffee (in a garden shed). Yet last night we won the Acland Award from the East Devon AONB for our community work.

"We knew we had been nominated, but actually winning seemed unlikely given the fact that we only formally opened our doors in February.

"Big thanks are due to all those who have given time, energy (and tools) and to the funders and many community partners and friends. Onwards and upwards!"

The award was presented to volunteers at the AONB's annual general meeting at Froginwell Vineyard.

The citation charted some of highlights in a memorable few months in finding funding, getting established, generating membership, running skill and hobby sessions and taking on community projects.

Axminster Community Shed is a place where men and women can meet, connect, chat and create. The group aims to help combat loneliness and isolation, but also to make a real difference to our wider community through input to socially beneficial projects, such as woodworking projects.
