Throughout the year Axe Cliff Golf Club run Roll-Ups for the Men and Seniors on Mondays and Wednesday which has been very popular.

Last Wednesday was the last event of the year and the sun shone leaving calm but cold conditions and enjoyed by some 42 members and guests. This year the Ladies were also invited to play and had eight guests who have all played in the past. A small playing donation was collected to the fund on prizes for everyone with food at the end of the year.

The Shot Gun start at 9.30, with teams of three on 14 holes, and was played over 15 holes getting everyone in at the clubhouse at about the same time for the festivities . This year's Master of Ceremonies was Paul Curtin who did a splendid job in not only collating the day's results but in giving out all the prizes.

All scores counted and the winning team was Malcolm Glass, Richard Orsman and Bill Dearling, who amassed a splendid 90 points. They were, however, pushed all the way by one team on 88 points and two on 87 with all receiving prizes.

As you could only win one prize the best individual score went to top chef Nigel Tarr with 33 points followed by others on 32, 30 and 29, again all receiving prizes ( mostly booze ) The team with the lowest score received the traditional Mars bars. The actual best score went to former captain Mick Swann on 35 points but we must spare a thought for Alan Kenworthy playing off a low handicap of eight and getting an amazing 34 points which included a two-shot penalty for playing the wrong ball! Anybody who played at least eight times in the Roll Ups over the year received a bottle of wine with the top four averages receiving a bottle of their choice. As you can imagine the presentation table was heavily laden.

It was a marvellous day and great to see the clubhouse heaving with people all enjoying the excellent buffet made by our Greens and Clubhouse staff led by Alex with full support from Andy, Dan and Tony and Harry. It was good to hear, from our guests, how good the Course and Greens were.

I have received a lot of enquiries of Geoff Hughes and his health so have decided to show a recent picture I took of him last Friday outside the clubhouse overlooking Seaton Bay. He still looks very healthy and happy at nearly 88 now. Hopefully we can get him playing soon as well joining the other two who are still playing in their 90s and where in the Roll-Up above .
