Tigers still looking for first win of the new year

Although Axminster's 1-1 draw at home to Holesworthy saw the Tigers dominate much of the game, especially in the first half, their first win of 2022 eluded them again.

In his programme notes manager Dan Prettejohn spoke about the lack of the team's lack of confidence, especially in the defeat against Crediton the previous week, but he did not think "the alarm bells were ringing just yet".

"The best way to get out of this rut is simple - work harder and make your own luck," he said.

Tigers were not a full strength by any means against Holesworthy with McGrath, Wadham and Winslade all missing, but the manager was confident there was enough talent on show to end their run without a win.

Prettejohn had no complaints about the Tigers' endeavour against Holesworthy, a side several places below them in the South West Peninsular Premier East division, especially in the first half when Axe created a number of good scoring opportunities.

The half-time scoreline of 0-0 did not reflect Axminster's dominance, although they lacked confidence in converting their chances.

New signing Oscar Latas gave the Tigers the lead after the break but Holesworthy got back on terms and Axe had to settle for a point.

Axminster remain in eighth place in the Premier East Division and on Saturday they have a real test as they meet league leaders Okehampton Argyle at Tiger Way (kick-off 3 pm).
