LYME Regis 1st started positively on a very open and uneven pitch and dominated the opening half an hour of the Dorset Senior Trophy against Poole Borough, creating three or four clear openings.

Against the run of play Poole took the lead after a quick counter attack when their best player on the day broke through from centre mid and lobbed keeper Brett Garner from 25 yards.

This unsettled Lyme who became very sloppy in possession and nervous on the ball. It wasn't until the 60th minute that Lyme emerged from this spell and Rikki Sargent sent a looping header into the top corner from a Robbie Fellingham corner.

This sparked another spell of dominance for the Seasiders but again were undone by a goal of great quality as Lyme cleared a corner only for it to be collected into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Mark Bailey and Tom Bastin came on for Lyme and the latter looked very dangerous even before he cut inside from the left to drill home the equaliser to finish the 90 minutes at 2-2.

Lyme dominated possession in extra-time but looked open to counter attacks and needed Garner to pull off a great save from a free-kick in the first spell of extra-time. The defining moment came after 110 minutes when three Lyme players failed to clear from a seemingly threatening area allowing the Poole winger to cross to a striker, who may have been offside, but was left with a free header from six yards.

While Lyme were the better side throughout, they will be kicking themselves at so many missed opportunities and not being at their best in a very winnable game.

This coming Saturday (April 17) Lyme Regis 1st are away to Devon and Exeter Premier East leaders Feniton with whom they drew 2-2.

Lyme Regis Reserves will be looking to avenge a 5-2 defeat at Teignmouth 2nds when the South Devon side travel to the Davey Fort on Saturday.

No spectators will be allowed inside the ground but drinks can be serviced outside the clubhouse when the game is finished.
