Axminster Town are riding high in the South West Peninsular Premier East division after a 2-1 home victory over Elmore on Wednesday, despite being reduced to ten men.

The Tigers are lying in third place in the table, behind leaders Brixham and Torpoint Athletic, having won four of their six opening fixtures.

Today (Saturday) Dan Prettejohn's men will be tested when they travel to second placed Torpoint.

Axminster started strongly against Elmore with a superb Lewis Waldy goal in the 17th minute and went 2-0 up soon after when winger Charlie Wilson fired the ball home.

Watched by a crowd of 114, the Tigers dominated the first half and could have gone interval with a much bigger lead.

The second half performance was marred by the sending off of the ultra-competitive Waldy who picked up two yellow cards, the second time he had got his marching orders this season.

Elmore made the most of the extra man and pulled one back in the 68th minute but Axe held out for another excellent victory.

Commenting after the game on Waldy being sent off for a second time, Prettejohn said: "I'm not going to rip into the lad for that's the way he plays and to be frank his cards are a result of his combative game, it's all part of what makes him a good player."
