Nub News commitment to local sport in East Devon was underlined last evening (Thursday) with the presentation of trophies awarded to the top batsmen and bowlers in last season's Devon Cricket Mini-League.

The full Devon League programme was not able to take place this summer because of the delayed season due to the coronavirus restrictions, so a number of tiered mini-leagues were organised instead.

Interest in the competition was boosted when Nub News offered a cash prize to most successful batsman and bowler playing for the local teams in and around the Axe Valley – Axminster, Seaton, Kilmington, Uplyme and Lyme Regis and Chardstock.

Three consecutive centuries by Uplyme & Lyme Regis all-rounder Tyler Wellman, a feat unknown in local recreational cricketing circles, clinched the Nub News Sport top ten batting award.

Tyler topped the top ten batting list with a 353 runs scored during the Devon mini-league games and wins £125 for his club and a trophy to mark his achievement.

In the bowling top ten, Seaton captain Ben Morgan topped the table with 16 wickets taken in the six games. He, too, wins £125 for his club and a trophy.

Uplyme, who won the tier 5 competition, dominated the batting statistics. Joe Elsworth was placed second with 287 runs and Steve Batey third with 227 runs despite the fact he only played in four of the six games.

Kilmington also had three players in the top ten batting table and three Seaton 2nds players also featured prominently

In the bowling table, Steve Batey (Uplyme) was placed second with 11 victims and Alfie Wraight (Axminster) third with nine wickets.

The trophies were presented at Seaton Cricket Club by Karl Hancock, chief executive of Nub News. He congratulated Tyler and Ben and wished them well for the coming season which starts on Mat 1st.

Nub News is also jointly sponsoring the forthcoming East Devon T20 Bash with the Lyme Online community newspaper and website. Mr Hancock presented a cheque for £500 to Steve Batey.
