Saturday July 2nd Kilmington 1st XI v Budleigh Salterton 1st XI
Stand-in skipper Matt Rockett won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a day where teams seemed likely to wilt in the field, writes Martin Hiscroft.
Despite cuffing the first two balls for 4, Kilmington's progress was sensible and 67-1 was a solid start. Slumping to 78-4 was not in the plans and on a good track meant a repair job was urgently required.
The two Josh's, Cann (105*) and Short (111) batted superbly, adding a controlled 220 for the fifth wicket, enabling Kilmington to post 342-5 from their overs. Ed Doble was pick of the Budleigh bowlers with 3-65.
Kilmington opening bowlers delivered tidy opening spells and Budleigh were behind the rate but that started to change when hard hitting Max Mejzner (122) joined Chathura Peiris (50).
Control was somewhat restored when Joel Seward (4-53) started to get to work on the middle order. Even then, skipper Lloyd Murrin (50*) attacked and Budleigh went into the last over needing 26 to win, eminently possible given what had gone earlier on. Oscar Oborn-Corby's death bowling restricted them to three runs.
This was another great win for Kilmington, doing the double over Budleigh, who felt Kilmington's exceptional ground fielding won them the game. Two tough games away to Exeter and Exmouth await but to win half of the first 10 games is great work by the team who are doing the club proud.
Kilmington 1st XI 342-5 (50 overs) Josh Short 111, Josh Cann 105*, Matt Rockett 39, Ed Doble 3-65 Budleigh Salterton 1st XI 319-7 (50 overs) Max Mejzner 122, Chathura Peiris 50, Lloyd Murrin 50*, Joel Seward 4-53, Josh Short 2-66.
Relegation beckons for Seaton
Still looking for their first win of the season, Seaton won the toss and elected to bat at home To Plympton, setting a target of 216-7 off 50 overs.
Seaton started well, getting 61 runs on the board before losing a wicket with opener Damier Baxter scoring 41 with Ben Morgan (37 not out) making a useful contribution.
Plympton look more than comfortable in the chase and nocked off the required runs for the loss of just two wickets with Justin Wubbeling (82 not out) and Tinotenda Mutombodzi (87 not out) doing the damage.
That'a ten games now without a win now and Seaton and relegation to the B Division now looks inevitable.
Seaton 5 points; Plympton 18 points.
