SEATON STRUGGLE IN ELITE DIVISION

Seaton's indifferent form in one of the Devon Mini-League elite divisions continued on Saturday when they were bowled out for 78 off 25 overs to lose by seven wickets at home to Exmouth.

Exmouth won the toss and elected to field but Seaton never got to drips with the home five-man attack, all of whom took wickets.

It was a disappointing batting performance by Seaton with ony one batsman, Toby Tucker (12) getting into double figures.

Pick of the Exmouth bowlers was George Greenway returning figures of 3 for 11 off nine overs. Andrew Buzza also grabbed himself a hat-trick of victims for the loss of 37 runs off six overs.

Seaton 2 points; Exmouth 19 points.

Seaton finish their Premier East (Tier 1) fixtures n Saturday (August 29) on Saturday at home to division leaders Sidmouth 1sts and will need a good points haul to avoid the bottom place (12:30 start).

KILMINGTON LOOKING GOOD FOR THE PLAY-OFFS

Kilmington gave themselves a strong chance of reaching the Devon Mini-League knock-out rounds with a six-wicket victory over Ottery St Mary.

Ottery won the toss and elected to bat but were bowled out for 148 in the 36th over. Top scorers were Eddie Rudolph (45), opener George Mutter (24) and George Southall-Brown (22).

Star of Kilmington's bowlers was Josh Short who finished with figures of 5 for 15 off six overs.

Kilmington knocked off the required number of runs for the loss of four wickets in 28.3 overs.

Skipper Brett Garner was top scorer, carrying his bat for 40, and was well supported by Billy Reed (33) and Josh Short (20).

Kilmington 18 points; Ottery St Mary 5 pts.

This victory leaves Kilmington well placed as leaders of the East E 1 (Tier 3) to reach the knock-out rounds but might depend on how many points they get in the last mini-division match on Saturday against second placed Upottery (13.00 start).

UPLYME WIN PLACE IN THE PLAY-OFFS

UPLYME & Lyme Regis made sure of their position in the Devon League Mini knock-out rounds with another resounding victory.

They made sure of their position at the top of the East E 3 (Tier 5) division with an 89-run victory over Honiton who are their nearest rivals.

Uplyme won the toss at Honiton and decided to bat. The visitors were without their influential skipper Steve Batey so in-form batsmen Tyler Wellman, who has hit three consecutive centuries this season, was pushed up the order to open.

And just to prove that the game of cricket has no respect for those in good form, before he knew it Tyler was making his way back to the pavilion without a run to his name.

It was left to opener Mark Batey (96) to steady the ship and steer Uplyme to a winning total of 229 for 5 off their 40 overs, failing to match his brother's century last week by just four runs. Good support came from Joe Elsworth (37), Alfie Jacques (35) and Sam Farrow (26).

Willy Graham was the pick of the Honiton bowlers with figures of 2 for 47 off eight overs.

In reply Honiton never looked like challenging the Uplyme score and were all out for 140 with only Kieran Conway (37) and Willy Graham (19) putting up any resistance.

Sam Farrow was the pick of the Uplyme bowlers, finishing with figures of  4 for 29 off 5.2 overs with Sam Wooster and Harvey Brimicombe grabbing  a couple of wickets each.

Honiton 5 points; Uplyme & Lyme Regis 20 points.

This victory sees Uplyme sitting on top of the East E 3 (Tier 5) division with 92 points, 37 points ahead of Honiton . With just one league came left, they are assured of a place in the knock-out play-offs as division leaders.

Their last game next Saturday is away to Ottery St Mary (13:00 start).

NARROW DEFEAT FOR AXMINSTER

Axminster Town failed to win their first Devon Mini-League match, away to Ottery Sy Mary, by just six runs.

Axminster won the toss and elected to field, a good decision by skipper Paul Miller as they limited Ottery St Mary to 142 for 9 off the allotted 40 overs.

Axminster's six bowlers shared the wickets between them with Robin Ellis (2 for 14), Owen Enticott (2 for 19) and Alex Wraight (2 for 40) sharing the honours. Dominic Goodhew, Jennifer Poole, and Daniel Murnane also took wickets.

The Axminster batsmen, however, did not rise to the occasion, failing by just six runs as they ran out of time, finishing on 136 for 7 off 40 overs. Bradley Conway (38), Paul Miller (28) and Mark Enticott (21) were the top scorers.

For Ottery, Jake Tierney was the most successful bowler, claiming four victims for the loss of 20 runs.

Ottery St Mary 16 points; Axminster Town 7 points.

This result leaves Axminster firmly entrenched at the foot of the table with 25 points from their five games. They play their final game on Saturday they are home to Honiton (13:00 start).

KILMINGTON ON BRINK OF PLAY-OFFS

A six-wicket victory at home to Ottery St Mary has put Kilmington on the brink of winning a place in the Devon Mini-League play offs.

Ottery won the toss and elected to bat but struggled against the Kilmington attack, especially Josh Short who took 5 for 15 off 6.3 overs.

Eddie Rudolph was Ottery's top batsman with 45 with George Mutter (24) and George Southall-Brown (22) making useful contributions in their total of 148 all out in 36.3 overs.

Kilmington knock off the required runs in 36 overs in which skipper Brett Garner contributed 40 of the 151 runs scored. Good support came from Josh Short (20) and and Billy Reed (33).

Kilmington 20 points; Ottery St Mary 5 points.

Kilmington go into their last game on Saturday away to Upottery (13:00 start) needing at least three points to finish division leaders.

CHARDSTOCK STILL IN HUNT FOR PLAY-OFFS

Chardstock fell just eight runs short in their penultimate Devon Mini-League match away to Clyst Hydon.

Chardstock won the toss and elected to field with the home team posting 181 for the loss of seven wickets in 40 overs.

James Billington was their top scorer with 31, closely followed by Graham Tude (30).

Richard Pyman was again the pick of the Chardstock bowlers, finishing with figures of 3 for 23 off eight overs.

In reply, the Chardstock top order all got runs with Gary Larcombe (48) leading the way and skipper Rob Hutchings pitching in with 33 useful runs. In the end, however, they were all out for 173 with jist 1.5 overs left.

Clyst Hydon 19 points; Chardstock 7 points.

Currently lying in second place in East E 2 (Tier 5), Chardstock are still in with a chance of qualifying for the play-offs, trailing leaders Sampford Peverell & Tiverton by 5 points. It will all depend on their last game on Saturday away to the division leaders (13:00 start).

SEATON 2nds MISS THEIR CHANCE

A maximum points score by Seaton 2nds away to Upottery 2nds could have given them an outside chance of topping the Devon Mini-League East E (Tier 6) – but it was not to be.

Having won he toss, the home team put Seaton into bat, bowling them out for 113 in 33 overs. Only opener Oliver Aplin (44) put up any real resistance.

Daniel Stevens (3 for 32 off six overs) and Andrew Pulman (3 for 16, also off six overs) were the pick of the Upttery bowlers.

Upottery knocked off the required runs in 34 overs.

Upottery 19 pts; Seaton 2nds 6 points.
