Torrential rain early on Saturday evening played havoc with Axminster's Big Christmas switch-on, organised by Light Up Axminster - but the festive spirit was still much in evidence.

This year the focus was on Silver Street and Church Street where various Christmas stalls were preparing to open when he heavens opened, resulting in a number of attractions being moved indoors.

The Christmas market was moved inside St Mary's Church where there were a number of Christmas and craft stalls as well as a Punch & Judy show for the children.

The main event of the evening's activities was the torchlight procession, being organised by Axminster Carnival Committee and which would have been led by the Mayor of Axminster, Cllr Jill Farrow, But the event was called off because of the wet conditions. The organisers said they wanted to reschedule the parade and would work with Light Up Axminster and others to see if this was possible.

Afterwards, Light Up Axminster's Cindy Furze posted on social media: "A final thank you to everyone for this year's effort. We had a great night despite the weather.

"You may have noticed a few teething problems with our timers, but our electrical wizard has been working hard behind the scenes and they should all now be set.

"Now we start putting our mind to fundraising for next year. We have a few more lights to add (Lyme Street, we're coming!) and replace, we would like to start thinking about getting Christmas Trees lit electrically rather than by battery where possible and we would love to have the across-street lights back again, so a bit to do.

" We start with Nicolas Goodwin doing his annual sing-a-long down at Tescos on Saturday, December 17 and the Pizza & Quiz Nights will return in January.

"Other dates for your diaries: The Cherry Fayre 2023 kicks off on Thursday, June 22 with The Raising of the Glove and ends with Axminster's Big Dinner on Friday, June 30.. Finally, pop next year's Christmas date in the diary - Saturday, November returning to South Street for the celebrations.
