Refurbishment work gets underway at Axminster Library
Axminster Library is currently closed to allow for a new felt roof and insulation to be fitted, which will help make the building more energy efficient.
The library in South Street closed doors on March 13 and is expected to remain closed until May 11, instead offering a pop-up service in The Community Waffle House in Trinity Square.
The building has been completely cleared of its book collection and scaffolding has now been erected to allow for work to start on the roof.
This will reduce the building's carbon footprint, and will see the current corrugated asbestos roof to the rear of the building replaced, along with corrugated asbestos cladding to the end gable.
The library was built in 1971 and is not listed. The alterations will not change its appearance from the front of the building, but will make the facility more thermally efficient and sustainable.
The pop-up library service is currently running at The Community Waffle House on Mondays from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, Tuesdays 10.30am to 5.30pm, and Thursday 10.30am to 4.30pm (except Bank Holidays).
It cannot offer all of the library's usual services, but customers will be able to renew and reserve books to collect. Book loans will be extended and reservations will be free.
Online services are also available 24/7 at devonlibraries.org.uk or via the Libraries Unlimited App, and the closest alternative libraries are in Colyton, Seaton or Honiton.
