Popular Axminster restaurant Ric's has closed its doors after two years fo trading, with owners putting the decision partly down to the rising cost of living.

Chef Ric Edgell and wife Laura opened the restaurant in 2020 and soon built up a reputation for his Mediterranean cuisine.

But the restaurant closed its doors this week, with Ric making a heartfelt announcement via social media, saying the decision to close was made with a "heavy heart".

He said: "We would like to thank each and every person who has visited us over the past two years. It's been an incredible privilege to serve you. We mean it. We couldn't have had the success we've had without your support.

"We in two years got to number two on TripAdvisor, over taking River Cottage, we have won two awards for hospitality and service, and have been nominated for three national awards for food and service, we've had some incredible staff who have lived and breathed Ric's, but now, it must come to an end."

Tic went on the explain the reasons for closure, adding: "First and foremost, new and exciting business opportunities have risen (in the local area, we're not leaving town) where by we'd be foolish not to take them, providing us with financial peace of mind. Exciting times ahead.

"Second of all, the cost of living crisis. It has affected us all, and business is no different.

"A drop off in footfall in town has lead to a decrease in sales, and that small decrease has affected us dramatically. With the cost of food, fuel, suppliers, electricity and others rising, even a small decline in sales puts us at risk.

"We've tried to ride the storm out as long as possible, and we know this is all just temporary, I'm sure hospitality will come bouncing back stronger than ever before, but for us, it's time to say goodbye.... for now.

"And thirdly, work/life balance... family is so important, and I don't want to miss my kids growing up."
