Plans which will help shape developments in Kilmington for the next decade have been formally adopted.
It comes following six years of hard work by Kilmington Parish Council and local community volunteers.
The Kilmington Neighbourhood Plan, which received overwhelming support at a recent local referendum, has been formally 'made' by East Devon District Council (EDDC). This means it will carry its 'full weight' in the consideration of planning applications in the parish until 2031.
Neighbourhood planning is extremely active in East Devon, with this latest addition bringing the total number of neighbourhood plans to be adopted to 24 – there are at least another seven being produced.
The Kilmington plan was developed following extensive consultation and engagement with the local community, an independent examination and the recent referendum where almost 95 per cent of those who voted were in support of the plan.
The document seeks to ensure the parish retains its 'unique and intimate character' whilst 'allowing limited incremental development to meet the needs of local people'.
To deliver this vision, the plan allocates two sites for housing, each with a set of detailed requirements to secure the kind of development the local community wants to see, including accessible and affordable homes, sympathetic design and areas of new and enhanced planting.
The plan also contains numerous policies designed to protect and enhance the special qualities of the area.
Councillor Dan Ledger, East Devon District Council portfolio holder for Strategic Planning said: "It's great to see another community completing the gargantuan task of getting their neighbourhood plan through the necessary stages and becoming "made". I'd like to personally applaud all the volunteers who worked so tirelessly to inform the future vision of Kilmington."
The neighbourhood plan and documents relating to its development are available on EDDC's website: Neighbourhood Plans being produced in East Devon - Kilmington (made) - East Devon
Hard copies can be viewed (by appointment only) at the EDDC offices at Blackdown House, Honiton or by contacting Kilmington Parish Council directly for local venues.
