Everyone has probably been a little late in returning library books on the off occasion – but 54 years late may be pushing it!

Axminster Library are questioning whether they have received the most overdue book in Devon, or possibly the UK, after a book due back on July 21 1967 was finally returned.

The library received the book – 'English in Anthology' – back in late 2021 from a customer who found it in her bookcase while having a clear-out, and recently announced the news on social media questioning whether anyone can beat being 54 years late.

A photo of a page inside the book shows it was regularly borrowed from the library during the 1950s and 60s.

We wonder what the fine for being late was?!
