Colyton, they say, is one of East Devon's most vibrant communities and this was certainly true last evening when the townsfolk turned out in huge numbers to witness the switching on of the Christmas illuminations in Market Place.
The whole event which involved all sections of the community was organised by Colyton Caterpillars Pre-School and they must have been delighted with the support they received.
The Town Hall was packed to the rafters with dozens of festive and craft stalls doing a roaring trade whilst the carol singers from St Andrew's Church were in fine voice as they waited for Father Christmas to arrive. A number of street stalls were also doing a roaring trade.
Santa eventually arrived on the balcony of the Colcombe Castle pub to switch on the lights before dispensing sweets for the children and moving on to his grotto in the Social Club to hand out presents for the little ones.
The Colyton Fire Brigade were on hand to keep an eye on the proceedings and the crowd were entertained by a majorettes display.
The local pubs joined in the spirit of the occasion by serving mulled wine and mince pies.
One of the organisers said they were delighted with how many turned out on a cold evening to support the event and thanked all those who had worked hard to get Colyton into the Christmas spirit.
