The whole of Hawkchurch Primary School turned out to watch the planting of a new oak tree in the village to commemorate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The bare rooted sapling, two to three metres tall, was gifted to the parish by East Devon District Council.

It is one of 70 oak saplings which will be planted in each East Devon town or parish community. This will form a special network of commemorative oak trees across the district, renowned for their longevity, strength, and unique position in the national landscape.

Cllr Ian Thomas, chair of East Devon District Council, attended the planting by the East Devon team. They will also provide a commemorative plaque for the tree nearer the time of the Jubilee celebrations in June.

The parish council would like to extend thanks to Sue and Derek Cowling for agreeing to 'home' the oak tree on their land.

If you want to say hello to the latest Hawkchurch resident, you can find it in the field behind School Close. The What3Words location is 'Physical.Bleak.Gobbling' – to the left of the footpath at the other end of the field as you enter from School Close.
