An evening of French food and film was enjoyed by members of Axminster Twinning Association.

In honour of Axminster's French twin town Douvres la Délivrande, in Normandy, more than 30 members of the twinning association and guests gathered at Woodbury Village Hall for a tasty three-course supper with English and French homemade hot dishes and a choice of desserts and cheeses.

A glass or two of French vin-rouge helped wash the meal down before the 'pièce de résistance' of the evening – a screening of the fast-moving, and brilliantly-naughty 2006 French romantic comedy, 'I Do', with English subtitles, which had the audience rocking with laughter.

Video-projectionist John Marriage, no stranger to these film nights, ran the screening flawlessly and his expertise is always much-appreciated by members.

Appetites whetted by the film night and two earlier post-Covid events – one at the All Saints Village Hall and a mini golf tournament at Lyme Regis – members are now looking forward to the last event on this year's calendar, the ever-popular Twinning Christmas Party, to be held in the Bradshaw Room of Axminster Heritage Centre on Thursday, December 15.

Caroline Hillyard, chair of the Axminster Twinning Association, thanked members and their guests for making the film night a great success and re-affirmed the association's determination to 'resume normal activities' following the pandemic, through a programme of events currently being planned for next year.

The annual general meeting in January will, as usual, kick-off the year's calendar, and Caroline was also able to announce that, although technically it is Axminster's turn to host its French friends, Douvres la Délivrande has asked if they can host the twinners of Axminster this year instead in 2023.
