After a period of heavy rain, a flood warning is now in place in the Axminster area.

Flooding is possible this evening (Wednesday) after heavy rain in East Devon over the past few hours.

This has meant that the River Axe is now rising and levels suggest that there will be flooding to low-lying land and roads close to rivers and around bridges.

Rivers are expected to remain high throughout Wednesday evening although no flooding to properties is forecast and warnings for this are not expected to be issued.

Axminster fire service said: "Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

"We are constantly monitoring river levels and have staff in the area checking for and clearing blockages in this location.

"This message will be updated on Thursday or earlier if the situation changes.

"Please only travel if it is absolutely essential in the weather we are currently having, and never enter fast flowing water or flood water where you are unsure of the level in your vehicle."
