Crowds line the streets for much-anticipated Axminster Carnival

Carnival night finally returned to Axminster on Saturday, with crowds lining the streets to cheer on entries.

It was the first carnival procession Axminster had been able to host since 2019, having missed out on two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year's event was then postponed in September, following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, sparking some concern over turnout and number of entries as the new date clashed with Taunton's carnival.

However, almost all entries from the East Devon circuit took part, with Sid Vale Carnival Club's impressive 'Van Helsing' entry taking the prize for best overall entry.

Entries were led by the Mayor of Axminster, Cllr Jill Farrow, and town crier Nick Goodwin, from Trafalgar Way into Trinity Square and around the town centre.

Large crowds turned out for the carnival, which was boosted by the return of Herbert's Funfair to the town, and those attending enjoyed a high-spirited, friendly atmosphere.
