Axminster Town Council is hoping that CCTV cameras can be installed on Trinity House to improve public safety in the town centre.

The council last year received a £5,000 grant from the Devon & Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) with the aim of improving community safety.

Following a public meeting with the police and council members, it was agreed the best way to spend this money would be on CCTV cameras in the town centre, and Axminster Town Council agreed to match-fund the grant with a further £5,000.

It was initially thought the cameras could be installed on the Minster Church to cover the Trinity Square area, but due to the height of surrounding trees this is not possible.

Instead, Trinity House and the building opposite which houses the Symonds & Sampson offices have been identified as ideal locations for the cameras.

Listed building consent would be required to install the cameras on the Symonds & Sampson building, and with a deadline of March to spend the PCC grant, it was agreed at this week's council meeting to first push ahead with the Trinity House cameras with this funding.

The council will then pursue the cameras at Symonds & Sampson with its own match-funding at a later date.
