Axminster Town Council hopes to pay tribute to two former mayors - Anni Young and Douglas Hull

Town councillors have been discussing how best to pay tribute to two former mayors of Axminster - Anni Young and Douglas Hull.

Anni Young died suddenly in December while still serving as Mayor of Axminster.

Councillors have now agreed that a defibrillator will be installed at the Community Waffle House at Trinity House, alongside a plaque in her memory.

Speaking at this week's virtual town council meeting, district councillor Paul Hayward said the defibrillator would cost £875 plus VAT, but he could arrange a 5% discount. He and fellow district councillor Sarah Jackson also said they would be willing to contribute towards paediatric pads for the defibrillator from their own budgets.

The town council agreed to this cost, along with the plaque.

They also hope to spruce up an overgrown area of land on the approach to Axminster Railway Station in memory of Anni.

The area of land to the right of the station between Trafalgar Way and the Station Yard access road is currently disused and the council hope to clear it and create an informal garden area with planting to encourage wildlife.

They are still following this idea up with Network Rail but said they already have several volunteers willing to help with the work.

Discussions on how to pay tribute to three-times Mayor of Axminster, Douglas Hull, who died last year.

Cllr Jeremy Waldon suggested renaming the former Senior Citizens Centre at The Old Courthouse, which was recently closed by Axminster Care Service.

He suggested it could be named The Douglass Hull Room and used as a new council chamber in future, when face-to-face meetings could resume.

However, other members of the council were not sure this was a fitting tribute to Mr Hull.

Cllr Sara Leat said she associated Douglas more with the garden at The Old Courthouse, and not the Senior Citizens Centre itself.

"If I were to name anything it would be the garden but it needs to be looked at and overhauled," she added.

Cllr Leat also pointed out that the council still needed to make a decision about how The Old Courthouse would be used in the future, and suggested renaming any part of it should be held off until they had a clear plan.

It was agreed not to rename the room for the time being, and to hold further discussions over the use of the building.
