Axminster's youngest ever town councillor, Ollie Tucker, has resigned as he says he cannot commit enough time to the role.

Mr Tucker was co-opted to the council to represent the Weycroft ward in February 2021 at the age of just 18, becoming the youngest member in the council's history.

He also ran for election to Devon County Council as a Labour candidate in May, winning 498 votes.

Mr Tucker resigned from the town council on Sunday and made the following announcement via Twitter: "I've always believed councillors should give up a serious time commitment to their residents, and unfortunately I am no longer able to commit that."

His resignation leaves a casual vacancy on the council which will likely be filled by co-option.

Axminster's Conservative county councillor Ian Hall, who beat Mr Tucker in the May elections, was among those to recognise his contributions to the town council, commenting: "Thank you for your efforts for the Axminster community as a councillors, which certainly have been recognised and I am all the better for knowing you. All the best for the future.

The title of Axminster's youngest councillor now falls to Cllr Hall's son, Charles Hall, who currently represents the Weycroft ward on the town council at the age of 22.
