Prizes have been awarded to winners of a community art exhibition in Axminster, which asked children and young people to express how they felt during the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns through their artwork.

The 'That's Not a Weed, That's a Wish!' exhibition and competition was organised by Kate Ridout last year, with a total of 27 entries displayed in the foyer at Trinity House, below the Community Waffle House.

Entries were judged by professional fine artist Becca Marais and the winners were announced last weekend with the Mayor of Axminster, Cllr Jill Farrow, on hand to present prizes.

The winner of the age 5-11 category was Ruby Hammett, aged 10, from St Mary's Primary School in Axminster, who received a hamper of art and craft supplies worth £150.

The age 12-18 category winner was Gemma Cleal, who was presented with a Faber-Castell art set worth £250.

Cllr Farrow then announced the winner of the mayor's prize at Lottie French, who received £50 worth of vouchers for art supplies at Axminster Printers and Archway Bookshop.

The competition was sponsored by Axminster Town Council from the mayor's fund and the prizes were generously donated by district councillor Sarah Jackson.

Organiser Kate thanked the mayor, town council and Cllr Jackson, as well as the Community Waffle House, Ian Styles and the Axminster Property team for their support.

Those attending the prize-giving commented on the high standard and wide variety of work submitted.

Kate added: "A huge well done to all who participated. The artwork you submitted was wonderful and we were deeply touched by them all."
